How to Clean Timber and Vinyl Window Shutters

Plantation shutters are both decorative and functional window treatments. Whether natural timber or vinyl, they give character and beauty to any room in the home. But if they are not properly taken care of, you’ll end up with a dirty and dingy window shutters. Keep the beauty of your shutters by cleaning them regularly. Maintaining window shutters are easy and cleaning them will only take a breeze, that’s why a lot prefer them over blinds in Perth or panel blinds. Cleaning Wood Shutters

Things Needed:

  • Vacuum with brush attachment
  • Spray type wood polish
  • Dusting cloth
  • Old Toothbrush

Cleaning Procedure:

Using the brush attachment, gently vacuum the shutters to remove debris and dust build-up. Do this at least once in a week.

At least once a month, spray wood polish into the shutters and then dust them thoroughly. To reach the upper portion of the window shutters, you may need to use a small ladder or stepping stool. Be sure to place the stool or ladder on a firm level ground to secure your safety while performing your cleaning job.

If your window shutters have small crevices that gather dirt and dust, use an old toothbrush sprayed with wood polish to clean the areas which are hard to reach.

Remember not to use soap and water when cleaning wood shutters for water might warp or damage the wood
Cleaning Vinyl Window Shutters

Things Needed:

  • Vacuum with brush attachment
  • Grease-Cutting Dish Soap
  • Bucket
  • Warm Water
  • Cleaning rags or clean cloth
  • Old Toothbrush
  • Soft Towel

Cleaning Procedure:

Use the soft brush attachment to gently vacuum the window shutters and remove the excess debris and dust in the shutters. Do this at least once in a week.

In a bucket with a quart of warm water, pour in about a teaspoon of grease-cutting dish soap. Mix them together until you form a sudsy solution.

Wet a clean cloth with the sudsy water and wash the window shutters properly. You might need a small ladder or a stool to clean the hard-to-reach part of the shutters. Make sure to place the ladder or stool in a firm flat ground to avoid any accidents when doing your cleaning job.

Get another clean cloth and then this time wet it with non-sudsy clean water. Use this to wash away soapsuds.

With dry towel, properly wipe the window shutters.

Dip an old toothbrush in the sudsy cleaning solution and lightly brush away dirt and dust which were gathered in the small crevices of your window shutters.
